Reed Your Raise’s 2023 Colt

2023 Solid APHA Registered Black Colt

Pretty headed black solid APHA colt - barrel horse and rope horse prospect
Not quite 4 weeks old in this picture.

This colt was supposed to be a filly for us to keep because this cross is just incredible every time.

This one might well be the best ever. He is classy looking, made right and so quick it’s amazing to just watch him move. Reed Your Raise (aka Angie), his dam, never raises a friendly baby and this one is no different. He’s the unusual Perks colt that isn’t walking right up to you for a scratch. Like all of his full siblings, that will change promptly when he’s weaned. Until then, I just smile when he zips away from people.

This colt has as much potential as we have seen in a baby. If he wasn’t a solid Paint, I’d keep him for a stud. If you want to win at the barrel, poles, breakaway and heeling all in the same day, and if you have the talent to ride a fast, quick horse, this is your guy!

Actually, his grandsire, Raise Your Rocket, was a PRCA steer wrestling horse sire, so this colt might work at that too.

He has a couple of full sisters that are riding really well. We expect the older one to hit the barrel pen pretty soon and her owner can’t brag enough about her.

Angie’s dam is a daughter of the great barrel sire Raise Your Rocket – a fast, quick-footed stallion who sired 1D and futurity horses. He put an amazing, flat kneed trot on all his foals.  She is fast and athletic herself as well as being good to handle. We had her broke and the trainer liked her. Despite her cowhorse bottom side, I’ve seen her outrun racehorse mares at short distances. She’s not a tall mare but this colt looks like he’ll be a bit bigger – maybe as big as 15 hands. (But, Perk’s colts are hard to estimate mature height.) I can absolutely promise he’ll be super stout when he grows up.

This colt’s tail female line goes directly to two horses who were foundations of Merle and Rose Marie’s program and instrumental in their early success as breeders. Her third dam, Reeds Little Queen, was a daughter of Rose Marie’s great stallion, Reed Silvertip. He was the last grandson of Joe Reed P-3 and a very successful local sire who never got the promotion he should have had. Her dam was Merle’s great little mare, Chief’s Queen Bee. In addition to many other successful horses, Queen Bee’s first foal was Kristin’s Appaloosa gelding, Apache Joe A. He was a World Champion team roping horse, a 7 time Canadian National Champion and 4 time Reserve Canadian National Champion in a variety of timed and cattle events including barrels, poles, and team penning. His versatility was amazing, but back then a good horse could do all the events. He was a state and regional year end high point performance horse and high point youth horse more times than we could count.  He won at everything from western pleasure to jumping to reining to all the timed events.  He was also an amazing ranch horse and he worked all week. He had just 30 days breaking by a professional and another 2-week tune up a year later. After that, a pre-teen Kristin rode him and Merle roped on him.  He was just a natural.

As exceptional as the foundation of this pedigree is, each generation since has added more speed, turn and competitive ability.  If you are looking for a cow-run cross barrel racing prospect that will make a rope horse too, this colt is a great prospect.

If you want to read more about this family of horses, Merle’s autobiography features them prominently.

If you can ride a really good one – you’ll enjoy this colt!
